We follow Ruhl on her deeply personal journey with Bell's palsy, and yet it resonates with themes of parenthood, creativity, moving through the world of the male gaze, unapologetic artistic talent and the web of intimate relationships that make up our everyday. There is at once a strength, vulnerability and playfulness in Ruhl's writing and we are invited to ask the big questions about healing, contentment, loss and aging. I have already gifted this title to five close friends, and I am comforted knowing those dear to me will get to spend time with this beautiful tome and will emerge engaged, comforted and, perhaps, more open to the gradual, imperfect healing that comes with self-acceptance and love.
